Art galleries are places where art works are exhibited so people can view them. There are numerous types of art galleries, some of which will exclusively exhibit one type of artwork, whilst others will display a variety of different works.
There are a number of famous art galleries across the globe, many of which are extremely popular tourist attractions. For example, the Louvre in Paris is one of the world’s most famous art galleries as it currently houses the Mona Lisa. However, art galleries needn’t be vast museums; there are many smaller art galleries both private and public. The distinction between private and public art galleries is that public art galleries, such as the Louvre, serve as museums where members of the public can visit to view art works, whilst private galleries specialise in displaying work with the intention of selling it.
There are also many contemporary art galleries which specialise in exhibiting works of modern art. The Tate Modern is one of the most famous examples of a modern art gallery and many well known and highly respected works of modern art have been displayed there.
The architecture of many art galleries can be considered a work of art in itself. A large number of art galleries, particularly those constructed in the later half of the twentieth century feature highly elaborate and unique architecture. The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is an art gallery known for its unusual and striking architecture.
